Harmada was a spider-like alien known as an ogumo who was portrayed by Jena Malone in A Child of Fire. She made her home on Daggus, where she came into conflict with Nemesis over the safety of a small child.
Biography[]
Harmada hatched under the surface of Daggus and lived on the planet for a thousand generations.[novel 1] She was a female member of the ogumo, the native spider-like inhabitants of the planet who were nominally extinct due to extensive destruction of their environment, the result of extensive mining operations by the Motherworld.
While forming her nest, Harmada discovered that none of her eggs would hatch as pollution rendered it impossible for them to mature properly. As Harmada was among the last of the living ogumo, her species was doomed to true extinction. This led Harmada to develop a grudge towards the miners of Daggus, whether they were directly responsible for her suffering or not. She set her sights on killing all of their children so their mothers would feel the same pain she felt, which led to the kidnapping of a human child.
Rather than killing the child immediately, Harmada clung to her as though she were her own child, allowing Nemesis the chance to hunt her down and attempt to change her mind. Unmoved by Nemesis' plea, the two fought, resulting in Harmada's death. Nemesis refused to celebrate her victory, knowing that Harmada was only defending her kind and that she had been killed needlessly.[1]
Though she lamented her children's inability to hatch, upon her death, eggs stored in her abdomen were released, quickly hatched, and her young scurried away into the depths of Daggus.[novel 2]
Abilities[]
- Ogumo physiology: As an ogumo, Harmada was very large and tough in comparison to humans, with many weapons being too weak to cause her any significant damage. Her many limbs enabled her to attack her foes from every angle.
- Polearm mastery: Using her skill with her barb in combination with her superior physiology, Harmada was able to keep up with Nemesis on even footing for a duration of their fight.
Equipment[]
- Barb: Harmada weilded a bladed polearm that she used in her fight against Nemesis.
Behind the scenes[]
Harmada was created through a combination of practical and digital effects. Her upper body and head were fashioned using a combination of various prosthetic devices and layered CGI, and Malone's voice was digitally modulated to sound animalistic when necessary. Malone also performed her scenes while fitted with a VFX rig operated by a green-screen crew to simulate Harmada's lower half and generate her character's distinct movements. She also trained in fighting with a short spear, which was meant to imply the heritage of Harmada's species, the ogumo. Framestore created the digital effects shots for Harmada.
Charlie Hunnam told Forbes that filming the fight scene between Nemesis and Harmada took about 18 days, but he wasn't sure how accurate this was off the top of his head. He and the other actors portraying the members of the Veldt resistance were stuck in the background, out of focus, standing there to watch the fight for this entire shoot.[2] The behind-the-scenes feature, "Zack Snyder's On-Set Diary," suggests that filming for this scene was occurring on day 23 of the shoot, though, it's unknown if accuracy was a focal point for these labels.
