JC-1435, known more simply as James or Jimmy, was a sentient machine who was designed centuries ago to defend the royals of the Motherworld as part of the Mechanicas Militarium. He was voiced by Anthony Hopkins and made his debut in A Child of Fire. He appeared once more in The Scargiver, as well as the director's cuts of each, Chalice of Blood and Curse of Forgiveness. According to Dustin Ceithamer, who portrayed the physical form of Jimmy alongside Hopkins' voice, filming for Jimmy lasted six months.[2] Chris Glenn was one of the concept artists behind the character.

Biography[]

"I was given memories of a world I will never see, loyalty to a king I cannot serve, and love for a child I could not save."

JC-1435 meets Sam.

JC-1435 was one of several identical androids created to defend the royal family of the Motherworld. They were collectively known as the JCs or Jimmys. Centuries later, he was repurposed by the Imperium to do their heavy lifting and was brought to Veldt when their forces demanded the moon's harvest. Private Aris activated him and politely requested his services, which JC-1435 was happy to perform. Marcus was excited to be left a Jimmy and showed off the Jimmys' unwillingness to fight by firing on him, knocking him into a pile of uraki dung, but JC-1435, as expected, did not fight back. He was befriended by Sam, a local farm girl, while he was cleaning himself off in the river. He told her the story of the slain king and the princess, Issa, and she changed his outlook on his own existence. She reminded him of Princess Issa, who he was programmed to love and protect, but who was assassinated all the same.

Jimmy in the granary

JC-1435 witnesses Sam's peril.

When Sam was taken by the military unit JC-1435 was meant to serve, Faunus commanded JC-1435 to kill Kora and Aris while using Sam as a human shield. JC-1435 made his own decision and chose to fire on Faunus, instead, after which he fled from the town. JC-1435 ventured out into the wilds of Veldt, found the corpse of a deer in a forest, and took its antlers as a crown. This was reminiscent of a crown of daisies Sam had made for him, at least on the fundamental level of fashioning something natural into a crown.[3]

Jimmy continued to watch over Sam and Aris and discovered the Hawkshaws spying on the village. Before they could inform Cassius that the villagers had access to a dropship, Jimmy eliminated each of them and cut off the communication.[4]

Jimmy v Imperium

JC-1435 faces the Imperium.

When the time came to either choose sides or stay out of it, JC-1435 initially stayed away, telling Kora that she would not win. As the battle went on, he decided to join the fray and single-handedly took down an Imperium mech and all the soldiers surrounding it. The Veldtians gathered to mourn their losses after the battle was won and Jimmy joined them, stepping in to join Kora after hearing that Princess Issa was alive. As dictated by his programming, he would have no choice but to attempt to find her so that he could serve her.[5]

Abilities[]

  • JC physiology: Designed for combat, JC-1435 was an exceptional fighter, capable of taking blows from slag weaponry without taking any sustained damage. His senses and coordination were also exceptional, allowing him to track the goings-on of the Veldtian farming village and its residents from imperceptible distances and aim weaponry from awkward positions with extreme accuracy, safe in the knowledge that he would strike the intended target rather than a nearby ally.
  • Weapons mastery: JC-1435 was capable of using anything from his hands, guns, or even pieces of his antler crown with a level of decisive precision and effectiveness unseen in the organic lifeforms he faced.

Relationships[]

Stella Grace Fitzgerald as Princess Issa

Princess Issa was a symbol of what the universe could be, giving JC-1435 a sense of warmth and hope. It's unknown if JC-1435 ever met her, but he was programmed to love her, and love her he did.

Charlotte Maggi as Sam

Sam befriended JC-1435 during his time on Veldt, giving him a daisy chain that stirred something in his mechanical mind. When he heard that she was in danger, he arrived to save her, taking up a gun and killing his commanding officer, Faunus, for her. He decided to continue watching over her from afar.

Sky Yang as Aris

Private Aris was the Imperium soldier to take JC-1435 out of storage and put him to work on Veldt. Aris was kind and JC-1435 took a liking to him, later refusing Faunus' order to kill him and killing the commander instead. As with Sam, JC-1435 watched over Aris from afar, helping from the shadows when he could.
