Raina was an inventor from Saaldorun who helped Adwin develop the first JC, Bartholomew. She was the protagonist of The Seneschal, portrayed by Ella Purnell.

Biography[]

Raina was a survivor from a Saaldorun tribe with divine magic that was slaughtered by Moa. She lost her mother and aunts, but later married the inventor, Adwin. Together, they crafted sex machines for wealthy clients such as their local governor but barely made enough to get by. One day, the governor secured an invitation to the Exposition of Novelties on Moa for the pair of inventors, where they would present an invention to King Ulmer. They crafted Sabine, a unique android modeled after Raina and designed to anticipate the king's desires. He was quite taken with her and they won the Exposition, earning a hefty reward, however, the king also wanted his way with Raina before allowing them to leave.[1]

"Adwin, how could you activate that monster? We agreed--"

To her displeasure, Ulmer kept Adwin and Raina in the palace for weeks, keeping Raina in his chambers for much of that time. A riot erupted in the city, eventually breaking through the gate into the palace. Adwin activated the Juris Machina that he'd brought to Moa alongside Sabine and commanded it to destroy the rioters. Raina was disgusted by this machine, having always been adamant that they'd never develop weapons. Despite this, she developed a heart for the machine, giving it love so it would feel the need to protect. Adwin was promoted to seneschal for saving the king and Raina, sick of Moa and the king, sneaked aboard a cargo jumper back to Saaldorun.[2]

Raina was only gone from Moa for a week when news of King Ulmer's wedding was revealed. His bride was Princess Velda, the Oasis Rose, crown princess of the Castor Caliphate, and heiress to the Tanweer Dominion. She was the hot topic of gossip around the royal palace and she was also, in fact, Raina. A child from the wedding choir made an attempt on Ulmer's life and Adwin, responsible for the wedding's security, was to be executed for his failure. Raina, the new queen of Moa, convinced Ulmer to exile Adwin to Saaldorun instead, keeping Adwin's promise to return home on his behalf.[3]
